Staffing up for the holidays and beyond, Convergys Corp. plans to hire between 250 and 300 more people for its Chattanooga call center.

Convergys has gained a new business for the holidays, and it needs more people to handle work for its existing clients, Crystal Wilson, the company's senior regional manager for recruiting, said Tuesday.

She said less than 100 of the jobs at its Eastgate Town Center offices will be seasonal slots, and the majority of the posts are full-time.

Wilson said the jobs will be customer service positions with some sales. Pay will range from $10 to $11 an hour, she said. Required skills are a "customer service mindset, being comfortable on a computer and some sales experience," Wilson said.

She said the added positions will put Convergys at nearly 900 employees in Chattanooga.

In addition to the Chattanooga jobs, Cincinnati-based Convergys is adding about 200 jobs at its Clarksville, Tenn., call center, the company said.

Debra Shaffer, Eastgate's operations manager, said Convergys is one of its biggest tenants along with the state of Tennessee in terms of employees.

She said Convergys will maintain its existing 65,000 square feet of space within the former shopping mall, though Eastgate officials are "most definitely" upbeat about the added jobs.

In North America, today marks Convergys' first annual nationwide hiring day to fill 10,000 new positions before year's end in the U.S. and Canada. Convergys plans to fill 4,000 of the slots this month.

The company said the jobs work well for military veterans and spouses of those on active duty, and it cited its work-at-home program.

Both the Chattanooga and Clarksville centers will host open houses for interested people from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. Also, people can go to Convergys website at www.careers.convergys.com.

Convergys opened its Chattanooga center in 1998.

The new jobs are the second announcement by a company in the area this week. On Monday, a new polyester fiber manufacturing company said it would hire 114 workers at a plant in Murray County, Ga.

PolyTech Fibers is moving into an 80,000-square-foot building, investing $12 million and hiring the workers over three years, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
