Yahoo Sports: Baylor has other candidates besides Sonny Dykes

There are other names to watch.

ESPN has claimed that the Baylor Bears have honed in on Sonny Dykes. The Cal coach is currently in Texas recruiting, and was actually spotted only a few hours away from Waco this morning.

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports has slightly disputed that report, saying that sources close to Baylor do not have Dykes as their main target and that there are five to six other candidates in the mix.

There is only one name mentioned for sure that Baylor is interested in, and that’s Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre. Baylor is reportedly waiting until after the Pac-12 title game to contact Mac and is banking on Mac’s Baptist origins to sway him toward the Bears, but I expect a hard no here. Colorado is a much better job than Baylor right now and the Buffs are likely to secure MacIntyre to a long-term contract.

Yahoo lists other names like P.J. Fleck, Mike Gundy (huh), Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma offensive coordinator), and Lane Kiffin (Alabama offensive coordinator), but none of them have been fully connected with the Baylor job as of yet, and honestly there are way better jobs. Baylor is not for an up-and-comer looking to break into the scene.

Baylor appears to have rejected down SMU’s Chad Morris after his contract demands were too high. Larry Fedora also appears to not be interested and wants to stay in Chapel Hill to coach North Carolina.

That leaves Dykes, who has had his name out there plenty in connection to Baylor, and the one thing that should be noted is the relationship Dykes has with the current athletic director of Baylor. Mack Rhoades was at Missouri last year and gave Dykes a very strong look, with reports that an interview actually happened.

If Baylor offers Dykes the job, would he take it? The signs are pointing to yes, but there’s still a lot we don’t know here.

What are your thoughts Cal fans?
