Reading Fightin Phils News Release

The Reading Fightin Phils announced their annual end-of-season player awards prior to Thursday night's game against the Binghamton Mets. Below is a listing of the awards and the recipients for the 2015 season.

FirstEnergy Reading Fightin Phils MVP and Mortgage America Big Stick Award- Brock Stassi

Named an Eastern League All-Star and MVP already this season, Brock Stassi adds to his list of accolades with the FirstEnergy Reading Fightin Phils MVP and Mortgage America Big Stick Award. Stassi is batting .306 (140-for-458) with 32 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs, 90 RBIs, 76 runs scored, three stolen bases, a .478 slugging percentage and a .395 on-base percentage in 129 games while helping lead Reading to first place in the Eastern Division standings. He currently leads the league in RBIs (90), runs scored, (76), doubles (32), total bases (219) and OPS (.873).

Earlier this season, the 26-year old was named to the Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star team where he was starting first baseman for the Eastern Division.

FirstEnergy Pitcher of the Year-Stephen Shackleford

Closer Stephen Shackleford's 2015 season was one for the history books in Baseballtown. The right-handed reliever has collected a league-high 28 saves while posting a record of 4-2 with 55 strikeouts and a 4.61 ERA in 51 games this season. His 28 saves set a new Reading franchise record, breaking the previous mark of 24 that was held by Justin Friend in 2012, Wayne Gomes in 1996 and Toby Borland in 1961.

In addition to leading the league in saves, Shackleford is also tied for the league lead in games finished (44) and ranked second in appearances (51). Stephen was named to the Eastern Division roster for the 2015 Eastern League All-Star Game in Portland.

Manderbach Ford Strikeout Leader-Ben Lively

Ben Lively began his 2015 season in Baseballtown after being acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for outfielder Marlon Byrd. He was part of the infamous "five-headed monster" rotation that featured Aaron Nola, Zach Eflin, Jesse Biddle, and Tom Windle and he quickly won over fans at FirstEnergy Stadium. With the Fightins this year, he has gone 8-7 with a 4.31 ERA in 24 starts with a team-leading 105 strikeouts. He is also tied for the team lead in wins with Eflin.

Railroad House Player of the Game-Andrew Knapp

When Andrew Knapp was promoted Reading in late-June, no one expected "The California Kid" to exceed expectations quite like he did with his torrid run over a two-month stretch. In just 52 games, the catcher has hit .364 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs while hitting 21 doubles. Knapp also collected two major hitting streaks over that 52-game stretch, hitting in 17 straight games from June 26th to July 21st and then 16 consecutive games from July 31st to August 18th. Recently, he was named Phillies Minor League Player of the Month for August after hitting .404 (40-for-99) with eight homers, 28 RBIs, and 23 runs scored last month.

"Broadway" Charlie Wagner Unsung Hero Award - Harold Martinez

Infielder Harold Martinez was an integral part of a Fightins offense that finished first in the league. In 82 games with Reading, he hit .297 with four homers and 30 RBIs while playing an excellent third base. A 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft out of the University of Miami, Martinez hit .382/.413/.513 through the month of July over 23 games as Reading made their climb to first place.

Pepsi Stolen Base Leader - Roman Quinn

Roman Quinn was a sight to be seen on the base paths upon his arrival to Baseballtown in April. Even though he played in just 58 games before suffering an oblique strain on June 12th, Quinn stole a team-leading 29 bases. He was selected to the Eastern League All-Star team in July. Miraculously, Quinn is currently third in the Eastern League among stolen base leaders.

Eugene L. Shirk Community Service Award - Art Charles

On top of their careers of professional baseball players, the Fightin Phils lend a hand in the Berks County community as part of the Philadelphia Phillies Community Service initiative. This season, first baseman Art Charles has the honor of taking home the Eugene L. Shirk Community Service Award after helping with baseball camps, hospital visits, and other community appearances. His 16 hours lead the Fightins collective team effort.
