» Visiting Angels, which provides in-home senior care, is sponsoring 42 teams in the U.S., including Sioux Falls, for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The company’s fundraising goal is $250,000.

» Soldiers from the South Dakota National Guard worked with members of Suriname’s armed forces to renovate infrastructure at the O.S. 1 Santo Dorp School in Wanica, Suriname, from Aug. 8-16. The renovation project was conducted as part of the Suriname and South Dakota State Partnership Program to provide training for military construction personnel while simultaneously assisting in a worthy community need. A team of eight soldiers from the 155th and 211th engineer companies worked alongside about a dozen Suriname Defense Force engineers.

» The Resident Chapel Group at The Inn on Westport, under the direction of the Resident Council, donated $4,425 to charities. The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, The Banquet, St. Francis House, McCrossan Boys Ranch and Children’s Inn received $700 each. The DAV received $225.

» Cinemark Holdings offered a Saturday morning of free movies and discounted concession items at Century theaters to raise money for We Charity.

» DooGooders celebrated cleaning dog poop from its 10,000th yard by making a $500 donation to the dog owner’s charity of choice. The family selected Sioux Empire Pet Rescue.

» As part of a national effort by Olive Garden to honor first responders, the restaurant on 41st Street delivered lunch and dinner to the Sioux Falls Police Department on Labor Day.

» Voyage Federal Credit Union donated $100 to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society as part its #LetsFindA Way social media campaign. The credit union donated $1 for every photograph taken in front of its banner at the Bark in the Park event that was posted on Facebook and shared or commented on.

» Home Instead Senior Care has launched a free tool, the Missing Senior Network, for the Sioux Falls area. Similar to other alert systems, family caregivers can notify a network about a missing senior with Alzheimer’s. Families can create a free account and input their network of friends and neighbors before a wandering event occurs. Then, if a senior wanders, families can quickly activate their personal network, sending out an alert via text or email.

» The annual Midco Charity Invitational raised $22,000 for The Compass Center, which provides advocacy and counseling services to domestic abuse and sexual violence survivors. Twenty-two teams – made up of 88 Midco Business customers, vendors and employee captains – played in the golf tournament at Spring Creek Country Club.

» Variety – the Children’s Charity led fundraising efforts to provide a specially designed bicycle for 5-year-old Phoenyx Benson of Sioux Falls, who suffered a significant brain injury. Spoke-N-Sport customized the bike.

» As part of Xcel Energy’s Annual Day of Service, employees from Xcel and Border States Electric helped the Great Plains Zoo with groundskeeping and preparing treats for animals.

» Kicking off its Goodwill Sale, Younkers and Goodwill hosted a Stuff the Truck event to encourage customers to donate used clothing. Customers received store coupons for their donations. Nationwide, Younkers hoped to collect 2.5 million pounds of clothing.

» Hot Harley Nights, which is organized by J&L Harley-Davidson, raised more than $165,000 for Make-A-Wish South Dakota.

» Wendy’s Restaurants of Sioux Falls sponsored Meet the Heroes of Sioux Falls. The event, which included emergency equipment on display, encourages positive interaction between children and emergency personnel.

» For National First Responders Day, LifeScape staff members and clients visited 11 fire stations, the police station and ambulance service to deliver cards of thanks and cookie trays.

» The Southeast Technical Institute Foundation has received three donations. Midwest Railcar gave $15,000 to create an endowment for the welding program and students. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers donated $25,000, and the National Electrical Contractors Association gave $15,000. Those funds will be used for scholarships in the electrical program and for program development.
