EATON — H.I.T. Foundation (Home Is The Foundation) recently announced the opening of its Homeless Services shelter. The facility is located at 2009 N. Barron Street, Eaton, just north of the main office.

The shelter serves as a temporary housing facility for homeless clients in Preble County. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. While in the facility, clients receive shelter and basic needs such as three meals a day, showers, laundry facilities and basic transportation services.

Also, while participating in the Homeless Services Program, clients receive case management services to assist them in establishing income, locating and securing appropriate housing and providing information and referrals to other services focusing on breaking down the barriers which cause homelessness.

Clients meet regularly with shelter staff and a case manager to work towards their housing needs. They are expected to meet weekly goals focusing on housing, in order to obtain housing within 30-45 days. Clients are also expected to follow a daily schedule and must agree to adhere to shelter rules.

The new shelter facility includes dorm areas which provide for 10 clients, a warming kitchen, a resource area with computers and client phone, and common areas. It is equipped with security services including security cameras in common areas, alarm doors and emergency fire and security systems.

Construction for the project was coordinated by Foster’s Home Improvement and several local contractors. Capital funding for the project was provided in part by the Timken Corporation, who provided a $50,000 grant.

Transportation is also provided on a limited basis. HIT Foundation staff provides the service for medical appointments, job-related appointments, etc. Staff also assists clients in schedule transportation from other sources. Transportation services are provided thanks to a donation from Rodney Cobb Chevrolet in Eaton.
