TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Traffic is flowing again on Highway 64 west of Tyler, and residents have returned to their homes after a vehicle lost control and struck a gas line and power pole.

According to the Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks, the crash happened on Highway 64 W. at County Road 1147 around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. A pickup truck hit a power pole, continued down the road and ran into a natural gas meter. Residents say an 18-wheeler then drove down the highway, snagged on the downed power lines and dragged down the pole.

Brooks says four homes near the crash were evacuated for over an hour because wind was blowing gas towards the homes, and downed power lines threatened to ignite the fumes.

Centerpoint Energy officials say crew pinched the gas line to stop it, and are in the process of restoring gas flow to the area. Oncor officials also stopped electricity to the area while they repair downed wires. Officials say around 390 customers are affected by the power outages, mainly down the highway. Service should be restored by mid-afternoon.

Brooks says the area is safe. Texas Department of Transportation officials have closed an outside westbound lane on Highway 64 W. while repairs to both the gas and power lines continues.

Airport traffic was closed down for some period of time, but the airport has returned to normal operations, Brooks says.
