Elementary school to hold Plant Day Celebration

Gulf Shores (Alabama) Elementary School is planting an American Heart Association Teaching Garden as part of an education initiative to help build healthy bodies and minds.

A Plant Day Celebration is set for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 3 at Gulf Shores Elementary School and will have the kindergarten class with Erie Hall Meyer Charitable Fund Art for Heart Committee Members and the American Heart Association to kick off the garden.

The Gulf Shores Elementary School’s American Heart Association Teaching Garden was created using AHA science and nutrition guidelines as well as information from gardening and education experts. The program combines nutrition education with garden-based learning. It is a real-life laboratory where students learn how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits. Numerous studies have shown that participating in school garden programs can improve students’ attitudes about fruits and vegetables. Gulf Shores Elementary School staff and students are excited about building a healthier student body, because studies show that kids who are healthy are proven to have higher academic performance.

For more information, about the Teaching Garden program and how a school can participate, visit www.heart.org/teachinggardens.
