Slumping Sales Result in 180 Layoffs for John Deere

Thirty workers at the company's Davenport, Iowa, construction equipment manufacturing plant will be laid off starting October 2

Quad-City Business Journal

John Deere plans to layoff 30 workers at its Davenport, Iowa, plant which makes construction and forestry equipment. In addition, another 150 layoffs will occur at Deere's East Moline, Iowa, plant where it manufactures combines and combine headers.

The East Moline layoffs will take effect September 18 followed by the Davenport layoffs which will begin October 2. A spokesman for John Deere said the layoffs are indefinite.

Deere announced in August its third-quarter earnings were down. The company had forecast combine sales would be down but unexpected poor construction sales impacted its layoff decisions.

To date, John Deere has laid off approximately 1,500 manufacturing employees.
