Game of Thrones has cast actor Ian McShane in a mystery role for Season 6.

And fans can't wait to find out who he'll play in the hit HBO series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the former Deadwood star will return for the most mysterious season yet, as it goes beyond what's previously been revealed in author George R.R. Martin’s novels.

Very few details have emerged as to who or what he'll play - but fans have their guesses.

Ian McShane, left, in Deadwood

According to the site, while McShane has a "relatively small amount of screen-time", he will play an important role.

Some rumours suggest it could be Randyll Tarly, aka Sam's dad - after a casting call by Watchers on the Wall called for a "Father" who's "one of the greatest soldiers in Westeros".

However others suspect it could be Euron Greyjoy, with a reported casting call for a "Pirate" who "has terrorized seas all around the world".

McShane is well known for starring in BBC's Lovejoy and HBO's drama series Deadwood.

Game of Thrones season six will be "sick", according to one of its major stars.

Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the fantasy blockbuster, has had a sneak peek at the scripts.

And what she has seen of Westros' sexy, bloody and violent future has left her desperate to reprise her role as the Mother of Dragons.

"I've seen some of the new scripts and I'm like a kid on a sugar high. I can't handle how sick some of them are," Brit actress Clarke, 28, is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

"We're just going to hit the audience with every episode, coming up with something more mental that the last.

"I can't believe some of the twists in store."
