Councilmember Chaim Deutsch (D-Brooklyn) hosted a community fire safety training this week in memory of the seven Sassoon children who were tragically killed in a fire early Saturday morning. The purpose of the forum was to expand safety training for community residents to ensure that everyone is educated to take proper safety measures.

Deutsch co-hosted the event with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, along with NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Public Advocate Letitia James, Congressmember Yvette Clarke, State Sen. Simcha Felder, Assemblymember Helene Weinstein, Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte, Assemblymember Dov Hikind, Assemblymember Steve Cymbrowitz, Councilmember Jumaane Williams and Councilmember Alan Maisel.

“We must turn our pain into purpose in the wake of this horrific tragedy, and the memories of the seven Sassoon children are the seven most important reasons for us to act with urgency,” said Adams.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) addressed a crowd of nearly 500 community members, who came out in droves to learn about fire safety for residential homes. Lt. Anthony Mancuso of the FDNY used props to demonstrate safety while cooking, described how to identify the safest electrical equipment and discussed the importance of having a plan in place in case of a fire.

Lt. Mancuso took several questions from the attendees on a variety of subjects to ensure that all concerns were addressed. Following the FDNY presentation, Dr. Norman Blumenthal, OHEL Director of Trauma, Bereavement and Crisis Response, spoke about how to deal with a traumatic experience such as this fire.

Home Depot and the FDNY generously donated smoke detectors following the terrible fire, and joined together to distribute them at the forum. Immediately following the event, Met Council and the NY Rescue Response Team began to install smoke detectors in the homes of senior and disabled constituents who contacted Deutsch for assistance.

Deutsch, in conjunction with Home Depot and COJO of Flatbush, will continue to distribute smoke detectors over the next couple of weeks. For more information on how to obtain a free smoke detector and arrange for free home installation, call Deutsch’s office at 718-368-9176.

“A smoke detector can save your life,” said Deutsch. “The large, diverse crowd that attended last night’s training was indicative of a vital need for increased fire safety training.”
