Tuesday Sector Leaders: Energy, Materials

In afternoon trading on Tuesday, Energy stocks are the best performing sector, up 1.5%. Within that group, Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) and Marathon Oil Corp. (NYSE: MRO) are two of the day's stand-outs, showing a gain of 6.5% and 5.4%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLE), which is up 0.7% on the day, and up 17.69% year-to-date. Chesapeake Energy Corp., meanwhile, is up 44.13% year-to-date, and Marathon Oil Corp. is up 32.09% year-to-date. Combined, CHK and MRO make up approximately 1.5% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next best performing sector is the Materials sector, higher by 1.1%. Among large Materials stocks, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE: CF) and Mosaic Co (NYSE: MOS) are the most notable, showing a gain of 4.8% and 3.6%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which is up 1.1% in midday trading, and up 14.81% on a year-to-date basis. CF Industries Holdings Inc, meanwhile, is down 36.95% year-to-date, and Mosaic Co is up 8.57% year-to-date. Combined, CF and MOS make up approximately 3.1% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
