Petway School 5K to spotlight bullying

VINELAND - Petway Elementary School will take action to help students, families, educators and the community address bullying prevention by hosting the first Run, Walk, Roll Against Bullying 5K on Sept. 25.

Race day registration and check-in for participants will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the school, 1115 S. Lincoln Ave. The run will begin at 10 a.m. Participants will head east down Menantico Road on a scenic course looping through nearby streets and ending back at the school.

Principal Jennifer Frederico said that the decision to sponsor the run was an easy choice for her and Assistant Principal Suzette Demarchi. “We’re both runners,” Frederico said. “It’s something we both love to do, so we’re extremely excited to be able to do something we enjoy for such a good cause.”

Proceeds from the event will bring anti-bullying programs to the school to educate students and staff. Money also will be donated to PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, a nonprofit organization that offers resources for students, parents and educators.

“We were trying to think of how to bring more awareness and information to our students,” Frederico said. “We do a lot in the character education program, but sometimes it’s something we still want to expand upon.”

Entry fees are $25 for 5K and $20 for one-mile walk. Entry fees will increase by $5 beginning Aug. 1. Everyone who registers in advance will receive a race T-shirt.

Awards will be given in the following categories: best male/female overall, age groups, team with the most participants, fastest team, and most patriotic attire. There will be hydration stations along the route, as well as post-race refreshments and a community fair at the school. Electric timing and officiating will be provided by TNT Event Management.

Local businesses also may contribute to the cause by becoming a sponsor. Sponsors have a variety of opportunities and donation levels to choose from, including items for the event itself or monetary donations.
