LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - After a string of movie theater shootings nationwide, one national theater chain is taking the first steps to prevent violence inside its screenings.

Last month's mass shooting in Lafayette, LA prompted the Regal Entertainment Group to increase security measures by checking guests' bags.

"I just saw a guy walk in and look at everybody and I check to see where my son and grandson were because it went through my head," moviegoer Jan Lewis said.

Lewis says this thought would have never crossed her mind years ago, but recent events have forced her to swallow this bitter pill.

"I spend my summers in Colorado and I've been following the trials for the shootings in the movie. I know that it's a problem we have to face," Lewis said.

The Regal Entertainment Group's response prompted us to check on the measures local movie theaters are taking.

Premiere Cinemas chose not to comment on the issue, and we were not able to contact Cinemark.

Alamo Drafthouse gave us this statement:

"For the safety and security of our guests, we are working with law enforcement in our local communities as well as the National Association of Theater Owners to review the security practices of Alamo Drafthouse locations. With the nature of our food-service, all of our auditoriums are monitored by staff at all times during each screening."

Lewis' son, Noel Mjolhus, says he is saddened by the mentality people have adopted.

"It's horrible," Mjolhus said. "I wish we didn't have to think like that or be that way, but who knows where things are going?"

He and his mother say they would rather be safe than sorry, but they are not letting fear keep them from flocking to the big screen.

"I enjoy the movies and I enjoy not being afraid," Mjolhus said. "I never had any doubts coming in here."
