Citrix Systems said 50 people are losing their jobs in Fort Lauderdale as part of a reduction of 1,000 workers that the software maker announced on Tuesday.

Workers are being notified this week, said Stacy St. Louis, spokeswoman for Fort Lauderdale-based Citrix.

Citrix, which has major operations in California and North Carolina as well as Florida, has said it will spin off its GoTo family of businesses and exit other non-core businesses.

Bob Calderoni, interim chief executive and executive chairman of Citrix, told analysts Tuesday that the restructuring is aimed at refocusing the business and making it profitable by “getting rid of a lot of distractions.”

GoTo, which is slated to become a separate company in the second half of next year, is managed out of Santa Barbara, Calif. Citrix creates software tools for people to work anywhere on any device.

Founded in 1989, Citrix is one of South Florida’s largest technology companies with 1,700 employees in Fort Lauderdale alone. The company has 9,100 workers worldwide.

In June, activist hedge fund Elliott Management bought a 7.1 percent stake in Citrix and began urging changes, including sale of certain assets.

Citrix’ stock lost 10 percent of its value on Wednesday after the restructuring plan was announced. On Thursday, the company’s stock recovered by $2.08, or 2.95 percent, and closed at $77.62.
