Gas leaks at Agrium plant in Borger

Ten construction workers were transported to area hospitals after a Thursday afternoon gas leak at a Hutchinson County plant, Borger Police Department Lt. Brandon Strope said.The anhydrous ammonia leak occurred about 4:15 p.m. at the Agrium plant at 9201 Farm-to-Market Road 1551 in Borger.Thirteen workers were impacted by the leak, 10 of whom were transported to Golden Plains Community Hospital in Borger. From there, two patients were airlifted to a hospital in Amarillo, where they were in stable condition Thursday night, Agrium General Manager Gill Craig said.Craig was unsure of the conditions of the eight patients who stayed at Golden Plains."Our heart and prayers go out to these workers and their families," he said.The leak occurred at the Urea Unit at the north end of the plant, which was in the process of resuming operations Thursday after several days of repairs. The unit was evacuated, Craig said.The unit will be closed as authorities investigate the cause of the accident.EMS crews from Borger, Stinnett, Fritch, White Deer, Pampa and Panhandle responded to assist Borger firefighters.The leak did not pose a safety concern for surrounding communities, Strope said. FM 1551 was temporarily closed for all nonessential traffic.
