ASU's 50 Best Professional Athletes No. 3: Golf's Phil Mickelson

Five major championships. 51 total professional victories. A U.S. Open win away from a career grand slam.

Yes, Phil Mickelson has nearly done it all in the world of professional golf, earning him a spot in the top three of our list of the 50 greatest pro athletes to come out of Arizona State.

The man they call "Lefty" was stacking up wins long before turning pro, however.

As one of the top collegiate players in the history of the game, Mickelson won a total of 16 NCAA tournaments in his time with the Sun Devils, including a trio of individual national titles. In addition to those victories, the San Diego product also won a U.S. Amateur, a Western Amateur, and the Porter Cup.

It didn't take long for his success in Tempe to translate to the professional ranks. Mickelson won a pair of PGA events in his first season on tour, then won his first major at the Masters in 2004.

He has since won a PGA and Open Championship, and now just needs a U.S. Open title to complete the career grand slam. With six runner-up finishes at the U.S., the odds are good that he will break through soon.

Mickelson's last victories came in back-to-back weeks in 2013 at the Scottish Open and Open Championship. He has most recently been in the news for an alleged insider trading case involving Dean Foods and famed sports bettor Billy Walters.
