Gartner: Windows 10 adoption to outpace that of Windows 7
Gartner Inc. is predicting good times ahead for Windows 10, saying it fully expects to see an upsurge in enterprise rollouts of the operating system in the first six months of next year.
Most enterprises will begin with pilot rollouts before broadening their deployments later in the year. By the beginning of 2017, Gartner says more than half of all enterprises will have begun some kind of production deployment, with full migrations to be completed by around 2019.
As a result, Windows 10 will soon become the most widely-deployed of Microsoft’s operating systems, assuming the mantle from the incumbent Windows 7.
That’s surely music to the ears of Microsoft, which has declared a goal of getting Windows 10 on one billion devices within two-to-three years. The company still has some way to go though, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella saying in October that there are currently just 110 million devices running the platform.
Gartner noted Microsoft’s decision to roll out Windows 10 for free, as well as the availability of broadband connectivity for most devices, as big factors in driving Windows 10 adoption on the consumer side.
As for the enterprise, Gartner said that strong application compatibility between Windows 7 and Windows 10, plus the planned January 2020 end of support date for Windows 7, are the main factors pushing enterprise adoption. In addition, Gartner also said it expects a growing demand for tablet and two-in-one machines to accelerate uptake.
“There will be tens of millions of users familiar with the operating system before the end of 2015,” said Gartner research vice president Steve Kleynhans in a statement. “For businesses, we expect that implementation will be significantly more rapid than that seen with Windows 7 six years ago.”
Microsoft launched Windows 10 back in July this year, but in its aggressive pursuit of its one billion device goal it’s received some harsh criticism for allegedly trying to force or trick some users into upgrading.
