Nintendo NX Games, Specs & Possible Release Date; 5 Speculations About Wii U & 3DS’s Successor

Nintendo made an announcement earlier that a new system was in the works. Called NX, the company stated that it would be different from DS and Wii.

Currently, there is limited information and few-to-none leaks about Nintendo's newest product. One possible reason was Satoru Iwata, former CEO of Nintendo, stated that the company was tight-lipped because it doesn't want competition to steal the idea.

Since there are no official announcements yet, so many turn to speculations instead. Here are some of them.

Is NX a console or a handheld?

The NX platform, according to Gaming Bolt, is speculated to be both handheld and a console. However, it was stated that it did not refer to a hybrid nor a convertible system — not a handheld that user can dock into a TV and instantly becomes a console.

Nintendo, allegedly, will have an NX handheld and NX console. Both will have the possibility to share hardware, at least to an extent.

Nintendo NX Hardware

Wii and Wii U reportedly suffered because their hardware made it not feasible for third party companies to develop games for their system. Many are pointing out that Nintendo should make a system for NX where third party developers can easily port or create games that would require minimal effort or investment.

Three options at hand are x86, a platform used by Mac, PC, PS4 and Xbox One. ARM, which is used for Android iOS and Windows Phone devices or will it stick to its current, PowerPC, which is also used by Xbox 360, PS3 and Gamecube?

Games

It has been rumored earlier that Square Enix's "Dragon Quest X" and "Dragon Quest XI" were already booked for Nintendo NX. There is still no confirmation about this since Nintendo itself did not officially reveal NX yet.

Other games that were rumored for NX are "Legend of Zelda" and a "Twilight Princess" port or sequel.

A/R or V/R

Digi-Capital managing director Tim Merel is convinced that Nintendo NX will incorporate Augmented Reality (AR) and/or Virtual Reality (VR), as per Fortune's report. The company could produce a low-cost AR/VR or mix reality head mounted display (HMD) to allow social gameplay.

Advanced Micro Devices

Recent rumors, which Bidness Etc learned, is that Nintendo's next console might use Advance Micro Devices. Both PS4 and Xbox One used AMD chips, so if NX is to compete with them, this option is possible.

The specs mentioned above are just speculations. Up to this point, Nintendo is still keeping details of NX's under the warps.

Many are pointing to a 2017 release date, but this wasn't confirmed as well.
