CarMax Inc. is one of the nation’s 50 best workplaces for diversity, according to Fortune magazine.
The nationwide used-car retailer, based in Goochland County, is 48th on the list released this week by the magazine.
According to the magazine, 43 percent of CarMax’s employees are minorities, with blacks making up 22 percent and Hispanics 16 percent. Those numbers and survey responses put CarMax in the magazine’s Top Ten workplaces for blacks and Hispanics.
Kim Ross, CarMax’s assistant vice president for human resource services and diversity, said diversity is a core value of the retailer. “We ensure every associate, applicant, customer, vendor and shareholder is treated equitably,” Ross said.
This is the first year Fortune has done diversity-workplace rankings. Announced earlier this week, the rankings were derived from surveys of nearly 70,000 minority-race employees and 128,000 women at more than 600 companies.
