Groupon launches ‘Groupon To Go’

The Internet coupon service will expand into the takeout and delivery markets

Groupon is expanding into takeout and delivery after acquiring OrderUp, with Groupon’s release of Groupon ToGo in Chicago. Since March, Groupon ToGo has been piloted with over 500 restaurants and is now ready to be released in Chicago, according to a press release.

"Most people get delivery and takeout multiple times a month, and with Groupon To Go, we’re giving them an easy way to save money every time they do so," said Sean Smyth, VP and general manager of Groupon To Go. "Delivery and takeout is a natural extension of our local deals marketplace, adding hundreds of the best restaurants to Groupon –– including many that haven't offered online ordering until now."

Groupon ToGo saves customers 10 percent or more on orders from top eateries in the form of instant cash back, Smyth said. Some of the nationally recognized brands participating in the launch included Quiznos, Papa John’s, Popeyes and Subway.

To celebrate the release, Groupon hosted a contest for offices in Chicago; participants were instructed to send a message to Groupon on their website (140 characters or less), outlining why their particular office should win the contest. The prizes included tailgate games and food delivered by former Chicago Bears coach and player Mike Ditka.
