US stocks move higher, on track for best week this year

NEW YORK | U.S. stocks are moving modestly higher, keeping the market on track for its best week this year.

Industrial companies were among the biggest gainers in midday trading Friday. International Paper jumped 6 percent.

European commodities giant Glencore jumped 7 percent in London after the company announced it would slash zinc production by a third.

Gap sank 7 percent after the struggling retailer posted disappointing September sales. Sales of women's clothing at Banana Republic slumped.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 22 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,071 as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern time.

The Standard & Poor's 500 gained a point to 2,014. The Nasdaq composite rose 14 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,824.

Bond prices barely budged. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 2.11 percent.
