RIEGELWOOD, NC (WECT) - International Paper announced Tuesday that it plans to expand fluff pulp production at its Riegelwood mill, but the expansion will cost the plant jobs.

According to a news release, International Paper will invest $135 million in the plant to transition to 100 percent fluff and softwood pulp production, adding an additional 400,000 tons of capacity. Fluff pulp, used in a variety of applications including baby diapers, feminine hygiene and adult incontinence products, is expected to grow globally by 3 to 4 percent.

The decision will shift the mill from three machines to a two-machine operation, which will result in fewer jobs.

"Converting the Riegelwood Mill to run 100 percent softwood pulp products best positions us for the future," said Floyd Whitmire, Riegelwood mill manager. "We will have fewer jobs as a result of shutting down one of the machines. However, based on what we know today, there will be no impact to anyone's job at the Riegelwood Mill this year as a result of the planned conversion. We also are hopeful that we can manage most, if not all job reductions by utilizing current vacancies, retirements and normal attrition. We have a lot of talent at Riegelwood and are committed to taking steps to reduce the impact of these changes on employees." Whitmire added.

The transition is scheduled to begin by the first half of 2016.
