As much as 79 per cent women in Bengaluru who are at risk of Cardiovasular Diseases (CVD) fall in the overweight or obese category, according to a study.

‘Saffolalife Study 2015,’ that was released here on Monday revealed that over 60 per of urban Indian women in the age group of 30-45 years are at risk of being affected by CVD.

The study was conducted in 10 cities and saw the participation of 1,299 women. Dr S S Ramesh, CMD Cardiologist, Vivus Heart Centre, Bengaluru, said that it was mostly the unhealthy eating habits that put the participants at the risk of CVDs.

“Excessive intake of food like cheese, food rich in trans fats, and late dinners are leading to increased abdominal obesity and increased waist-to-hip ratio, a major risk factor for heart diseases,” he said.

The study has also revealed that increased belly fat or a broad waistline, waist-to-hip ratio more than 0.85 and the Body Mass Index being above normal are major risk factors.

According to Dr Priyanka Rohatgi, Chief Clinical Nutritionist and HoD, Dietetics Department, Apollo Hospitals, said that having late dinners is becoming a normal trend among urban women due to late working hours and lack of time. “This is an invite for heart diseases,” she remarked.
