Downtown's newest Starbucks will open 7 a.m. Saturday - the first retail component to open in 20 Midtown, the 200,000-square-foot development in the heart of Birmingham.
The Starbucks will occupy 1,850 square feet at the corner of 20th Street and 3rd Avenue South and have a drive through immediately behind the building.
It's the first opening in 20 Midtown, the Publix-anchored development by RGS Properties' Dick Schmalz and Scott Bryant of Scott M. Bryant & Co. that's expected to total more than $100 million in investment.
"Obviously, we are very happy to be seeing the first of many exciting openings at 20 Midtown," Schmalz said Tuesday.
The first apartments on top of Starbucks will be open by the end of October, Schmalz said. There will be 36 apartments in this building.
Also going in the building with the Starbucks is a Chipotle Mexican Grill, which recently won approval from Birmigham's Design Review Committee to have outdoor seating. Next to the Chipotle, SRS will have an office as well as the leasing office for the apartments.
Across the street, the Publix building will have 86 apartments, mostly 1-bedrooms with some 2-bedrooms. The Publix is planned to open next summer.
20 Midtown will sit on more than 200,000 square feet downtown.
Tammy Cohen of Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds is the architect. Martin Smith of SRS Real Estate Partners is managing leasing the retail space.
"Choosing a site for a new Starbucks location is a key element in providing customers with the Starbucks Experience and we carefully consider many factors when opening a new store and are very proud to be coming to the downtown Birmingham area," a Starbucks spokesperson said in an email. "We love being part of people's daily routines and look forward to serving and be part of this community."
