OKLAHOMA CITY — A local elementary school was chosen as the recipient of a $25,000 grant from Devon Energy on Thursday.
Devon surprised Bodine Elementary School with the huge grant to fund weekend field trips and lab studies every month for the next three years.
“We are excited to award this grant to Bodine Elementary to enhance education for students in earth science, engineering and geology,” Devon’s Vice President for Strategic Planning, Kevin Lafferty said.
The school was surprised with the announcement in a classroom full of cheering students, teachers, and administration by Devon officials carrying banners, balloons, and sweet treats for the students.
“Science plays an essential role in our business at Devon, and we want to encourage the next generation of scientists who are the future of our industry,” Lafferty said. “With the new lab and field studies program, great things are ahead for students at Bodine Elementary.”
Devon Science Giants gave the education grant to aid the school in building a new program for laboratory and field studies in earth science, engineering, and geology.
The school’s principal, Nikki Coshow says she hopes the Science Giants grant will help show students a world of science outside of their neighborhood, with a goal to develop a love of learning in science that will extend into secondary and college scientific paths.
