MGM Resorts International, which is set to build a resort casino in Springfield, Mass. sued Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and two other high-ranking state officials on Tuesday over a new law that enables the state’s two tribal nations to build a third casino to prevent visitors from going to MGM.

The lawsuit Tuesday against Malloy, Secretary of State Denise Merrill and Commissioner Jonathan Harris of the state Department of Consumer Protection says the law giving the Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation the exclusive right to develop a casino on private land in northern Connecticut disciminates on the base of race or ethnicity against other potential developers of that casino.

The Mohegans and the Mashanetucket Pequots operate two large casino resort on their reservations in southeastern Connecticut – Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino – a but the new law gives them the ability to jointly operate a third one. The measure that passed the Connecticut General Assembly was written with the intent of preventing residents and visitors from driving across the border to the three Massachusetts casinos and one slot parlor.

The MGM property specfically was a reason for the third Connecticut casino, as its Springfield resort would be closer to the Hartford market than Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods.
