Dominion Foundation awards grants in Prince William County

Dominion Resources recently awarded $1.2 million in grants supporting environmental initiatives across the Commonwealth and in areas served by Dominion. The grants were made available through the Dominion Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm.

Dominion Resources is the parent company of Dominion Virginia Power.

In Prince William County, three nonprofit organizations received significant grants:

–Leesylvania Park’s Living Shoreline Project received a grant of $30,000 to provide shoreline stabilization and protection along roughly 800 linear feet of tidal Potomac River shoreline, while also enhancing and restoring riparian, inter-tidal and near-shore habitat using living shoreline techniques. The park is located in Woodbridge in the southeast area of Prince William County.

–Naturebridge received a grant of $20,000 so that PW County seventh-graders can participate in an environmental science and stewardship project at Prince William County Forest Park. The project will connect students to the wonder and science of nature, and also develop the next generation of environmental stewards. The grant helps to fund the three-day, two-night outdoor learning experience for the students.

–Friends of the Occoquan received a grant of $10,000 to continue their Rain Barrel Workshops to promote water conservation/prevent erosion, and to introduce local groups and organizations in Prince William and Fairfax counties to the benefits of establishing community food gardens. Funds will also go toward preparing videos and literature about these two projects.

In 2015, 28 organizations in Virginia shared $500,000 in environmental grants from the Dominion Foundation; 52 organizations in eight states shared the total of $1.2 million. Since 2003, the Dominion Foundation has given more than $20 million in support of environmental initiatives.
