Friday Sector Laggards: Healthcare, Energy

In afternoon trading on Friday, Healthcare stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 0.8% loss. Within the sector, Biogen Inc (NASD: BIIB) and Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (NYSE: VAR) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 2.9% and 2.8%, respectively. Among healthcare ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLV), which is down 0.9% on the day, and down 2.15% year-to-date. Biogen Inc, meanwhile, is down 5.02% year-to-date, and Varian Medical Systems, Inc. is up 20.63% year-to-date. Combined, BIIB and VAR make up approximately 2.8% of the underlying holdings of XLV.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, showing a 0.8% loss. Among large Energy stocks, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE: SWN) and Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB) are the most notable, showing a loss of 7.5% and 3.6%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE), which is down 0.8% in midday trading, and up 18.33% on a year-to-date basis. Southwestern Energy Company, meanwhile, is up 64.49% year-to-date, and Schlumberger Ltd. is up 16.87% year-to-date. Combined, SWN and SLB make up approximately 8.9% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
