KELLOGG — A popular route from Rochester to Wabasha and Kellogg is about to get a detour.
Motorists on Minnesota Highway 42 near Kellogg will encounter a detour beginning July 10 as crews work to replace the bridge over Gorman Creek. The bridge is the last one along Hwy. 42 to the east before it intersects with U.S. Highway 61, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Replacement of the bridge will take from July to October.
Local businesses along Highway 42, such as SVJ Creative Designs and Cowpokes Western Shop, are open and accessible by following signs along the detour route. A detour connecting Highway 61 to Highway 42 by using Wabasha County Road 14 will be in place during construction, MnDOT said.
In addition to the replacement of the bridge, the concrete weir under the bridge will be replaced with a series of rock weirs. A weir is structure across a river that is used to change the flow from upstream to downstream. It can help with fish migration, navigation or flooding, according to MnDOT.
