Finding shoes that are actually affordable might get a little bit harder soon. Bloomberg reports that Payless, facing hard financial times, may close 1,000 of its stores in a deal with its lenders.

An inside source told Bloomberg that Payless is in talks with its creditors as it tries to deal with debt. Currently, the company has more than 4,400 stores in 30 countries, and more than 25,000 people work for them. Racked notes that back in September, Payless had planned on closing 500 smaller stores in favor of bigger "Super Stores" that could compete with DSW; it's unclear whether that's still in the cards for the retail chain. A representative for Payless had no comment on the news at this time.

But Payless isn't alone in struggling these days. Brick-and-mortar chain stores have been suffering lately as more and more people shop online. Here are just a few stores that have closed locations over the past year: Kmart, Sears, Macy's, Sports Authority, The Limited, and BCBG. Looks like your local mall is about to look a lot emptier in 2017.
