BERKELEY – Six Golden Bears advanced to the singles quarterfinal on the first day of the annual Cal Nike Fall Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts. One of those six was freshman Olivia Hauger, who posted two victories – including an upset of Arizona State's Kassidy Jump – in the Blue Singles Flight in her collegiate debut.

Hauger topped San Jose State's Marie Klocker, 6-0, 6-1, in the opening round of 32 before facing the fifth-seeded Jump in the round of 16. The ASU junior took the first set before Hauger rebounded to win the match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

After four older Bears earned first-round byes, they lost just one set en route to sweeping through the round of 16. Top-seeded and fourth-ranked junior Maegan Manasse quickly dispatched Sacramento State's Daria Savchenko, 6-1, 6-2, fourth-seeded and 64th-ranked sophomore Karla Popovic beat UC Santa Barbara's Stefani Stojic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, third-seeded and 33rd-ranked junior Denise Starr defeated BYU's Nicolette Poulsen, 6-1, 6-3, and, with the sun beginning to set in the background, second-seeded and 16th-ranked senior Klara Fabikova knocked off Jamie Pawid of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-3.

In gold singles, second-seeded sophomore Lyann Hoang also reached the quarters, beating Nevada's Lea Schneider, 6-4, 6-4, at Channing and then defeating UCSB's Amanda Atansson, 6-2, 7-6(1), at Hellman.

In Cal's lone doubles match of the day, junior Stephane Lin and sophomore Audrey Mayer beat BYU's Demi Daniels, and Brittanie Eraso, 8-4, in the Gold Doubles Flight round of 16 to reach Saturday's quarterfinals. Three other Cal pairs reached doubles quarters by virtue of byes, including the top-seeded and third-ranked Starr and Manasse in blue doubles, the second-seeded Fabikova and Popovic in blue doubles, and the top-seeded Hauger and Hoang in gold doubles.

Saturday's action at the Cal Nike Fall Invitational starts at 8:30 a.m. with doubles at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis courts.
