NEWBURYPORT — A fuse box inside the Mersen building on Merriamac Street caught on fire yesterday around noontime forcing its dozens of employees to evacuate, according to local police.

Police City Marshal Thomas Howard said the small fire didn’t spread past the affected area. Unable to douse the fire out with water, Newburyport firefighters remained on scene as a National Grid crew shut off power to the building.

About 130 employees work at the facility which produces high-performance materials for extreme environments. Last year, Mersen cut 70 jobs at the plant as part of a restructuring plan.

Merrimac Street remained open during the call with a lone police officer directing traffic.
