Giga-Tronics Reports New Scalar Network Analyzer Resurgence

SAN RAMON, Calif. - November 19, 2010 -- Giga-tronics Incorporated (Nasdaq: GIGA) announced today that it is experiencing a resurgence in demand for its Model 8003 Precision Scalar Analyzer. The new market demand for the scalar analyzer solution is driven by increasing applications above 20 GHz in frequency range, and the significant cost advantages of scalar versus vector network analyzers at those frequencies.

The Giga-tronics Model 8003 Precision Scalar Analyzer features a 90 dB dynamic range, quite comparable to vector network analyzer performance. For certain applications such as magnitude only or for tuning and adjustment, scalar analyzers offer faster setup, simpler calibration, and better ease of use than VNAs.

John Regazzi, CEO of Giga-tronics stated, "With budgets tight, a scalar network analyzer solution can be significantly less expensive than a vector network analyzer. Our typical 40 GHz SNA configuration is around $65K, versus close to $100K or more for a 40 GHz VNA and cal kit. Compared to VNAs, scalar analyzers are less prone to operator error, and can often be used by less well training technicians and operations. "

The Model 8003 Precision Scalar Analyzer can make accurate, single sensor power measurements over a frequency range of 10 MHz to 40 GHz with a dynamic range of -70 to +20 dBm. This is ideal for applications such as tuning filters and adjusting amplifier gain flatness.

Giga-tronics scalar network analyzer solutions include a microwave signal generator, such as the Giga-tronics 2440C, which offers lower phase noise and lower spurious and harmonics than typical VNA sources. Giga-tronics is currently offering a new scalar analyzer package with attractive pricing.
