High School golf: Defending state champs Happy, Tascosa JV girls win titles

The defending state champion Happy Cowboys and the Tascosa Junior Varsity girls claimed team titles earlier this week at a pair of golf tournaments hosted by Happy High at Canyon Country Club.

A total of 40 girls competed in the Monday tournament in beautiful spring weather with the Tascosa JV girls edging the host Happy Cowgirls by a total of 412-424.

The top individual player in the girls tourney was Motley County’s Sierra Wilcox who shot a score of 86.

Teams playing in the girls division were Happy, White Deer, Sudan, Panhandle, Spur, Tascosa JV, Amarillo High ninth graders, Motley County and Farwell.

The Happy boys, despite not having an organized practice due to its state runner-up finish in basketball, shot a 343 winning by 22 strokes over Panhandle (365).

In the individual competition, Happy senior and West Texas A&M signee Mitchell Downing shot an even par 71 claiming medalist honors by four strokes over Salym Maddox of Memphis who shot a very nice 75. Third place went to Happy’s Sterling White with an 82.

Fifty-two boys competed in the boys division from the following teams: Happy, White Deer, Sudan, Panhandle, Spur, Tascosa JV, Tulia, Ft. Elliott, Motley County and Farwell.

Happy boys and girls golf coach Barry Stevens praise “all of the parents and boosters who gave of their time and resources to provide meals for the teams both days during the tournament. The sausage wraps and grilled hamburgers were the very best.”
