Eight Dallas-Fort Worth companies among largest privately owned firms in U.S.

Fifteen Texas firms made Forbes' 33rd ranking, putting it third among states.

Dallas-Fort Worth is always well-represented on Forbes' annual ranking of largest privately owned companies in the U.S.

This year, eight D-FW-based businesses made the cut of 225 private companies with annual revenue of $2 billion or more. And Texas scored 15 firms on the publication's 33rd ranking, putting it third among states. California (29) and New York (25) were the top states.

Here are Texas companies on this year's list, along with overall rank, headquarters city and 2016 revenue. Dallas-Fort Worth companies are bolded:

Last year's leader in Texas, computer giant Dell Inc., dropped off the list because it began public trading after completing its $67 billion merger with EMC Corp. The Round Rock-based company had $61.6 billion in revenue in 2016.

A Colorado company on this year's list, CH2M Hill Cos., also will be dropping off Forbes' ranking when it becomes part of Dallas-based Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. The engineering firms announced a $2.85 billion deal earlier this month.

D-FW also is filled with companies that just barely miss Forbes' cutoff — like this Frisco logistics firm with $1.8 billion in annual revenue. With a fresh capital infusion from TPG Capital, Transplace could climb onto the list next year.

The Dallas Morning News recently published its annual ranking of biggest publicly owned companies in the region. Exxon Mobil, AT&T, American Airlines, Energy Transfer Equity and Southwest Airlines topped the 2017 list.
