The NVIDIA SHIELD is one of the more recent additions to the Android TV landscape and yet, since its arrival it has quickly established itself as one of the most sought after Android TV devices. This is partly thanks to the emphasis on hardware that NVIDIA placed when designing the product, resulting in an Android TV unit which is significantly more powerful than what is currently available.

However, another reason for why the SHIELD is becoming increasing popular is due to the level of support the unit seems to receive. Since its launch, the SHIELD has consistently been seeing the level of gaming that is on offer being increased with new games becoming available or other games becoming further optimized to make best use of the SHIELD’s hardware. In fact, the latest of these announcements came roughly a week ago when The Battle of Sol became available. Not to mention, the SHIELD also seems to be seeing consistent updates coming through too. The last of these came through back in July and brought the software up to v1.3. That update came with improvements for the WiFi and controllers. Well, it now looks as though the SHIELD is receiving its next incremental update today and as to be expected, this one is bringing the software up to v1.4.

In terms of the update, it seems this one mainly adds support for a bunch of new apps and games. The NVIDIA support site does note the main purpose of the update is to optimize the SHIELD for the newly released apps and games and as such, some of these will already be available on your system and will simple see the update improving their compatibility. In terms of the new apps and games, NVIDIA list quite a few of them including FX NOW, WWE Network, Fox Sports Go, CBS Sports. CBS News and The Weather Channel. While in terms of the games, optimizations include This War of Mine, Xenowerk, Windward, Killing Floor, Flyhunter Origins, Twin Runners 2 and Pure Pool. Therefore, if you haven’t already seen the update land on your system, it might be worth checking as the update should be ready to install.
