Store manager John Miller talks about the varieties of wine available to customers at Weis Markets on Baltimore Street in Hanover on Dec. 1, 2016.

Wine lovers in Hanover will have many options to choose from next time they do food shopping at their local Weis Supermarket.

The Weis location on Baltimore Street in Hanover is the first Weis in York County to offer all 180 varieties of wine the cafes will offer, company spokesman Dennis Curtin said.

Weis Markets with in-store cafes at Roosevelt Boulevard, Queensgate Mall, East Market Street and Martin Street will also offer wine, but only 10-15 varieties, Curtin said.

“We wanted to have a selection for the Christmas holiday, but it’s a small selection,” Curtin said.

Those locations are expected to feature the full 180-variety variety by the end of the year.

The ability to sell wine and beer in their stores comes after Act 39 went into effect this August. The law gives businesses that already have a restaurant or hotel beer license the ability to apply for a permit to sell wine.

An expired York County liquor license is up for auction after a fair amount of demand was received during an auction last fall.

Do bars do enough to stop underage drinkers?

Other stores in the area, including a Giant in Springettsbury Township and the Holy Hound Bottle Shop in York, are also selling wine in their stores because of the Act 39 provisions.
