DALLAS, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- AT&T customers visiting Cuba will receive improved cellphone service with roaming access and direct interconnection with the country's provider.
AT&T announced an agreement Monday with Empresa De Telecomunicaciones De Cuba, the government-owned telecommunications company known as ETECSA.
Customers visiting the island won't have to swap a SIM card to access voice, text and data roaming.
"Cuba is a growing international calling destination for our customers," said Bill Hague, executive vice president of AT&T Global Connection Management. "With this agreement, AT&T customers soon will be able to seamlessly connect with talk, text and data while visiting Cuba."
AT&T hasn't announced when the service will start or prices.
Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile -- the other top cellphone providers -- have similar deals in Cuba.
Several other U.S. companies are now doing business in Cuba.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Marriott plan to open hotels on the island.
Carnival's Adonia docked in Cuba on May 2 when it arriving from the Port of Miami with 700 passengers. It was the first U.S. cruise ship to dock in Cuba since 1978.
