Altoona Police chase ends in crash

A Kellogg man was arrested early Friday morning after he led police on a chase from Altoona to Colfax, according to a news release.

Around 3 a.m. Friday, Altoona Police found a car accident scene near the 600 block of 1st Avenue North, along with a front bumper, Iowa license plate and three struck water shut-off valves. While investigating, police found a GMC Envoy matching the accident scene with 27-year-old Hank Lee Benson inside.

As police attempted to pull Benson over, he allegedly sped up and led them on a chase starting northbound on 1st Avenue North and entering Interstate 80 eastbound. Benson went through a construction zone, reaching speeds between 95 to 115 miles per hour, and ultimately crashed his car at the Colfax exit to Highway 117, according to the news release.

Benson has been charged with eluding law enforcement, driving while license barred, improper use of median and failure to obey traffic control device. He was taken to Polk County Jail.
