The official trailer for the third, and last season, of “Da Vinci’s Demons” has been released.

In the battle rich teaser, we see young Da Vinci (Tom Riley) wielding a sword, coming to consciousness in rubble, and kissing the ring of evil Pope Sixtus IV (James Faulkner). In shock, as he sees his inventions being used by Ottoman invaders, the tormented genius anxiously wonders, “How can I fight myself?”

Just as the historical drama seemed to be revving up toward some major action, it is definitely about to all wind down. As reported in Variety, show creator David S. Goyer, whose credits include script work on “Blade” and Christopher Nolan's “Batman” trilogy, seems good-naturedly conflicted about his series coming to an end. Goyer said, “While ending Leonardo’s journey is bittersweet for me, I’m happy we’re ending the story on a high note.”

Elaborating on the nuance of the subject matter being reflected in the series, Goyer said, “Leonardo was famous for his mirror-writing, and there’s a symmetry to the entire series — between the first episode and the final one — that I think the maestro would have appreciated.”

Although the last episodes of the historical fantasy are several months away from even airing, Goyer sounds as if he is already saying his goodbyes, thanking fans and the Starz network for, as he puts it, joining him “on this crazy romp.”

In particular the writer/director expressed his gratitude to actor Tom Riley, saying, “It’s no small feat to portray a genius, but Tom did it with grace and humor. I hope everyone enjoys these final episodes as much as we enjoyed making them.”

The final season of “Da Vinci’s Demons” will premiere at 8 p.m. on Oct. 24.
