A regional lender is providing grants to help make certain first time homeowners are ready for the financial commitment.

M&T Bank has given $600,000 statewide to non-profit organizations that provide homeownership education.

That includes instruction on proper budgeting, counseling on anticipated expenses as well as access to cost assistance programs.

Locally, M&T Bank supports Metro Interfaith Housing and the First Ward Action Council.

Regional President Peter Newman says first-time buyers can even earn up $7,500 toward a down payment.

“It’s a big deal to come up with your down payment to buy a house today. And there are programs such as the First Time Homeowners Club where the bank will actually match $4 for every $1 saved for a period of up to 24 months to help build that deposit. But then homeowners also need to demonstrate an ability to meet the ongoing expenses of homeownership,” said Newman.
