Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane branded current skipper Wayne Rooney "awful" following the Red Devils' drab 0-0 draw with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Irishman questioned Rooney's leadership skills and suggested he should rethink his off-field activities following his appearance at a WWE Raw event in Manchester on Nov. 9.

United and Rooney were far from their best against PSV, and the result left their Champions League future hanging in the balance. Keane placed much of the blame firmly at Rooney's feet, per ITV (via Matt Morlidge of MailOnline):

Wayne [Rooney] was on about lack of composure and quality, but I think he was as guilty as anybody. He needs to step up to the plate. You look at Wayne's legacy at Old Trafford, it's absolutely fantastic. His goals record is brilliant. But now he's the captain there's more responsibility and I think he's got to do a lot more.

I always question certain players what are they doing off the field. Last week I saw him slapping a wrestler and I'm thinking 'Why is he getting involved in all that nonsense?' There's no benefit to him. I'd have a look at that side of it.

It's certainly not helping him. I wouldn't begrudge him going out and enjoying himself, but if you're not at it yourself you've got to have a look and lead by example. He didn't do that tonight. He doesn't look sharp, he looks awful. Mentally he doesn't look really sharp, physically he doesn't look in great shape. He needs to have a look at himself.

Keane's comments were not received well by wrestler Wade Barrett—real name Stuart Bennett—whose fight Rooney went to see earlier this month:

If Roy Keane's looking for a piece, I'll batter him too. https://t.co/aMppceCKnU

But the former Sunderland and Ipswich Town manager is not the first person to question Rooney's form this season.

The 30-year-old has looked some way off his best for much of the campaign and has netted just three times in 15 Premier League and Champions League performances combined, per WhoScored.com.

Rooney's place in Louis van Gaal's starting XI has even been questioned, per Bleacher Report's Dean Jones:

His stats from Wednesday's clash at Old Trafford do not make for good reading and will cast further doubts over whether he should still be United's main man, per Squawka Dave:

Goals have been sparse for United this season, and if Rooney does not find his scoring touch again soon, Van Gaal may decide to look at alternative options.

The draw with PSV leaves United needing to beat Wolfsburg away from home in their final Group B game to guarantee qualification to the knockout rounds—no easy feat given the Bundesliga side's remarkable home record, per BreatheSport:

Rooney's immense talent and experience suggest he could rediscover his form ahead of the crucial clash in Germany on Dec. 8.

But if he does not, United could be staring at a group-stage exit from Europe's premier club competition.
