Great Plains Energy, which serves Missouri and Kansas, says cooler temperatures hurt bottom line
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cooler-than-normal temperatures during the first half of summer hurt revenue and profits for the company that owns Kansas City Power & Light Co.
The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/1KTyLxS ) reports Great Plains Energy on Thursday reported second-quarter operating revenue of $609 million, down from the $648.4 million it took in during the same quarter a year ago.
Net income fell to $44.4 million for the three months that ended June 30. During the same quarter last year the company reported a $52.1 million profit.
Great Plains says its operations were affected by scattered severe weather during the early part of summer, including a storm that led to the largest customer outage it’s experienced since 2002.
The company’s electric utilities serve more than 838,000 customers in 47 counties in Missouri and Kansas.
