Nearly 300 UT alumni, spouses, families, and special guests convened at the Knoxville Convention Center October 2 for the Alumni Board Awards Dinner.

The mood was all red carpet as nineteen remarkable Volunteers from a broad spectrum of ages and professions were recognized for their achievements and contributions to UT, the nation, and the world.

Terry Begley, president of the Alumni Board of Directors, served as master of ceremonies. Clay Jones, the Alumni Board vice president, gave the invocation, and Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek updated the attendees with good news from campus.

The four winners of the Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna award made remarks after receiving their awards.

Kim Bush, director of Life Science Partnerships and a member of the Global Health Leadership Team for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, spoke about UT being a big part of his family, as both of his brothers are UT graduates. He also noted that after years of living abroad, coming back to UT felt like coming home.

Senator Bob Corker credited the friendships he made at UT and the real-world preparation of his education with changing his life and launching his career.

Amy Miles, the CEO of Regal Entertainment Group, expressed gratitude for the foundation UT gave her to start her career. She also thanked her family, other award winners, and Regal Entertainment Group.

Alan Wilson, president and CEO of McCormick & Company, recalled making the good decision to attend UT on an ROTC scholarship; serving in the US Army, where he met his wife; and building and growing his career at McCormick.

The evening culminated with a singing of the alma mater, after which Alumni Promise recipient Ellie Holcomb led the audience in “Rocky Top.”
