Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 70 Souvenir Jacket Collection

Trending News: Must-See New Converse Chuck Taylor Collection

Why Is This Important?

It is a lux version of a classic sneaker with a historical twist.

Long Story Short

The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ‘70 “Souvenir Jacket” pack features two high top sneakers that draw inspiration from post WWII-era Japan.

Long Story

Fresh off of the success of the converse Chuck Taylor All Star 2, the Boston brand returns with a special edition pack that is steeped in history.

Sukajyan were souvenir jackets that United States military personnel bought as they left their various posts after World War II to commemorate their time in the Land of the Rising Sun. These men and women often took their flight jackets to local tailors and had them embroidered with animals, patterns, maps, trees and other things that reminded them of Japan. American iconography completed the look with eagles, military regalia and squadron names.

The look was not only popular among military personnel, but also amongst socially conscious young people of the 1960s who wore the jackets as a political statement.

As the trend grew, Japanese craftsmen began to create their own Sukajyan jackets. The popularity continues today thru various designers who adopt the reversible embroidered theme — most notably Ralph Lauren.

Converse provides a twist on the souvenir jacket by translating it to footwear. Instead of the silk and satin that the jackets were made of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ‘70 “Souvenir Jacket” sneakers come in soft goat leather — perfect for fall/winter weather. Bright crouching tigers are featured in an all-over print of the black pair. The dark blue pair is shows an intertwined snake and skull pattern, with green and pink color pops. Both pairs have contrasting satin linings while leather ankle patches, toecaps and rounded rope laces.

The shoes — which are part of the high-end Converse First String Collection — will arrive at Converse flagship stores in the US, on Converse.com, and select premium retailers worldwide at a retail price of $150.
