The 485 MW Blythe Mesa Solar project has finally been granted approval by the Department of the Interior. A right-of-way grant is still required.
While there is still no date set for construction, the solar PV plant is set to be located around 13 kilometers west of the city of Blythe in eastern Riverside County on 3,587 acres of private land, previously used for agricultural purposes. A 230-kilovolt generation interconnection transmission line will also be built, thus allowing the facility to connect to the Southern California Edison Colorado River Substation.
The project, belonging to Renewables Resources Group, is the 57th renewable energy project authorized by the Interior Department since 2009, 39 of which have been solar. "With this approval, the BLM is well on its way in realizing the president's vision of permitting 20,000 MW of renewable energy on public land by the end of this decade," commented BLM Director Neil Kornze.
Correction: pv magazine mistakenly wrote on September 25, that the project originally belonged to NextEra Energy. We would like to apologize for the confusion. NextEra Energy is working on a similar project, the Blythe Solar Energy Center, located around two miles from the Blythe Mesa Solar Project.
