At the beginning of this school year, sixth grade student, Indiana Wright, realized the importance of having a sink in his sixth grade science classroom at the Sport and Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA). His class was the only science classroom, out of ten, that did not have a built-in sink. Taking it upon himself to research portable sinks, he contacted several companies regarding a science grant to purchase one. Indiana found a biotechnology product development company that was interested in providing a grant. With the help of Mr. Bisogno from Thermo Fisher Scientific, Indiana developed a proposal, a statement of need, and a presentation demonstrating the value of the sink to SMSA and his classmates. Thermo Fisher Scientific accepted the proposal because they encourage Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives and like to invest in future scientists at a young age. The sink came in mid-April and the students and teacher had an unveiling ceremony. SMSA students are very grateful to Thermo Fisher Scientific, Mr. Bisogno, and Indiana for working together to provide our school with a very much needed portable sink!
