Drive, Tourists wrap up weekend with wins
Needing a victory to salvage a split of this weekend’s four-game series, the Greenville Drive offense was more than up to the task, scoring eight times over the final five innings to roll past the Rome Braves by a 10-2 score.With the game tied at two in the fifth, Mitchell Gunsolus untied it with one swing of the bat, as he smacked a two-run homer off Max Fried (2-3) to put the Drive (24-25) ahead for good.  The home run was his sixth of the year, which ties him for second on the club.After a Tate Matheny sacrifice fly in the seventh tacked on a run to the lead, the Drive exploded for five more runs in the ninth.  Jayce Ray and Roldani Baldwin each doubled in the frame to bring home a pair, and Trenton Kemp added a run-scoring double as well.Logan Boyd (5-4) gave the Drive a solid effort on the mound to earn the victory.  He worked six innings and struck out six while allowing just four hits, two runs and two walks.The Drive took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Chad De La Guerra singled off Fried to plate Baldwin, who walked, and Kemp, who doubled.In the third, the Braves (20-30) scored twice thanks to RBI singles by Luke Dykstra and Austin Riley.Ray led the way offensively for the Drive, going 3-4 with a pair of RBI.  Kemp added two hits on the day, while Gunsolus reached base four times with a homer and three walks.The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees.  Monday’s game will start at a special time of 2:05 PM for Memorial Day.  Right-hander Anderson Espinoza (3-4, 3.86) takes the hill for Greenville, and Charleston will counter with right-hander Luis Cedeno (1-1, 3.38).Jack Wynkoop was brilliant on Sunday afternoon in leading the Asheville Tourists to a 5-0 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators. Wynkoop came one out away from a complete game shutout but was lifted with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Kelvin Franco retired the final batter to secure Asheville’s third shutout victory of the season. Tanner Banks started for the Intimidators and he matched Wynkoop through the first four innings. In the fifth, the Tourists plated three runs off Banks thanks to some aggressive base-running and timely hitting. Terry McClure drove in the first run with an RBI single to left. The next batter, Scotty Burcham, doubled down the right field line to plate McClure. Mylz Jones connected with an RBI single later in the inning. The score remained 3-0 until Asheville added two more in the ninth. Chris Rabago lined an RBI single into left to score Brian Mundell and Yonathan Daza crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Wynkoop limited the Intimidators to only six hits; five of which were singles. The former South Carolina Gamecock picked off two runners from first base bringing he season total to 13. Wynkoop had a chance for a complete game. He faced three batters in the ninth inning and retired the first two. Danny Mendick reached on an error and Tourists’ manager Warren Schaeffer went to Franco for the game’s final out. The 8.2 innings pitched is a season-high for Wynkoop and a season-high for any Tourists pitcher this year. Asheville ended up winning three out of four against Kannapolis will continue their road trip with a three-game series in Hagerstown. Monday’s game will begin at 7:05pm.
