TESCO wants to sell the lease for one of its former Express stores as soon as possible.

The St James's Street shop, which closed on August 20, will not be re-opening, a company spokeswoman confirmed today.

She said Tesco was looking for someone to take on the leasehold for the premises as soon as possible and it would be up to the new tenants as to whether they operate the cash machine outside which has also been shut down.

The company was keen to see the store filled quickly and thinks this will happen easily as it is an attractive location for retailers, she added.

The building was bought by London-based real estate company Alpha Deus Ltd for £1,575,000 in October last year, Land Registry documents said, and Tesco has been renting the space.

The store was one of four supermarkets on the Brighton road. It opened in 2009, closely followed by a Sainsbury's Local on the street's corner with the Old Steine in 2010.

Previously Tesco said it was looking to find alternative jobs within the company for the 17 people working at the store. It has two other Express stores in Jubilee Street and Queen's Road.
