Sandisk delays 6TB and 8TB SSDs to next year

Sandisk has confirmed it plans to release SSDs with higher capacities than 4TB next year. The company announced this during the presentation of their quarterly figures. The SSDs were initially planned for 2015.myce-sandisk-4tb-ssd

The SSDs are not targeted at consumers but for enterprise storage. This is also the target for the current Optimus Max with a capacity of 4TB. The larger capacity SSDs are likely of capacities of 6 and 8 TB with both the same SAS interface as the Optimus Max. While the current SAS interface offers 6Gbit/s, the new generation should increase this to 12Gbit/s. The large capacity SSDs are based on 15 nm Toshiba NAND, further details haven't been disclosed yet.

Sandisk estimates SSDs with a higher capacity than 4TB will contribute to its revenue from the end of 2016 which indicates the SSDs will become available somewhere in 2016. Previously Sandisk planned to offer 8TB SSDs in 2015, but that doesn't seem to be happening. What has caused the delay is unknown. When there will be consumers SSDs with these kind of large capacities is unknown.
